A holistic retreat to rebalance after lockdown

Are you looking for the perfect fun post lockdown tonic for mind, body and soul? Are you are feeling the urge to literally burst out of your bubble and seize your freedom by exploring new experiences, while also maximising the retreat experience in serene and stunning surroundings?

Our creativity-focused retreat is designed to raise your vibration, stimulate your self-expression and passionate nature, relax you and bring a big, refreshing smile to your face. You will learn some new tricks and probably make a new friend or two as well.

We are a collective of experts in our chosen fields who have gathered in this beautiful part of New Zealand with the desire to help shine a light on your unique creative nature. Tuition and self-exploration in a laid-back atmosphere!

Our retreat is aimed at anyone wishing to explore more than one area of their creativity. While the key activities will be centred around art - with life drawing and oil painting classes, we will also be offering the gentle, introspective modalities of crystal bowl healing, yoga, and meditation.

At the end of each activity- based day, you can enjoy a relaxing massage, a Japanese food demonstration and cooking lesson, and then gather around the open fire with like-minded people to taste exquisite wines from our local vineyards and to discuss the world of art.

Our retreat is located at an extraordinary venue known as Lake Hawea View,  and indeed the lodge is itself a work of art . This 25-acre luxury property overlooks the pristine blue waters of Lake Hawea and surrounding mountain ranges, and offers a gorgeous open-plan living area,  stacked stone fireplace, state-of-the-art facilities, delightful indoor-outdoor flow, and a selection of accommodation packages.

Wellington born, Wanaka-based artist Jane Kellahan has been a force to reckon within the art scene for over 25 years. Her evocative, atmospheric and thought-provoking paintings, often conveying an environmental message, have won her numerous national and international accolades.

Crafted onto canvas, paper and wood, Jane’s works incorporate organic materials gathered from the southern lakes district with sensuous oils and mediums to create compelling visual textures that convey depth, potency and an exquisite dance of light.

On this retreat Jane will tell you about her personal, passionate journey as an artist and share some of her secrets with you. Her focus will be on the importance of art and creativity in your life.

During her tutorials Jane will take you through the planning process and where to seek inspiration and ideas, as well how to select your colour palette. She draws on her 25 years experience of developing unique techniques and processes that help prepare a canvas and then bring it to life.

Her practical tips will include a tutorial on choosing and using paints and other chemicals including mediums and turpentine. The importance of protecting yourself while using these substances, practical detoxing methods - including using Kangan (alkaline) water which will be available to drink during the retreat.

Jane will available to chat with and answer any questions you may have throughout the retreat.

On this retreat we are excited to have Matt Gauldie share his 20 years of knowledge and wisdom. You will be given the opportunity to create some expressive, figurative, nude life drawings using charcoal.

Matt has over 20 years professional experience working with a wide variety of mediums including bronze, oil painting, print making and illustration.

From 2004 to 2015 Matt was the official New Zealand Army artist - a posting that saw him creating paintings and sculptures depicting New Zealand soldiers on active operations overseas and throughout New Zealand. Matts sensitivity and innate ability to capture the nuances of the human spirit in the most untenable conditions lends an intimacy and depth to his work that directly transports the observer to the emotion and scenario his works are depicting. A rare talent that speaks to both a unique individual and an incredibly gifted artist.

Over the years Matt has also immersed himself in a wide variety of figurative works capturing the daily lives of sheep shearers, horse-racing, orchard workers and general New Zealand life.

In more recent times, Matt has developed a reputation for his large scale public bronze sculptures such as Sapper Moore-Jones in Hamilton City, and a monument for Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington. His most recent sculpture in the Waikato was to commemorate the fallen horses that were sent to WWI and never returned.

Not only will you receive one-on-one tuition from Matt, as he will be joining us for lunch and dinner, this will give you the perfect opportunity to spend time chatting to him about his extraordinary experiences.

Yumi learned the tradition and skills of Japanese cooking in her home environment from an early age. Her mother has not missed the annual making of homemade Nukazuke (vegetables pickled in a bed of fermented rice bran) for over than 50 years.

Yumi then further honed her cooking skills throughout her early 20's while working in a restaurant in Japan. After moving to New Zealand, she learned kiwi-style food preparation helping out at the kitchen at Millbrook Resort, and eventually in 1999 established her own restaurant business, Bistro Bruno with her husband, Hisashi "Bruno" Sasaki, in Wanaka.

The business has been grown and changed the style from café restaurant to Japanese restaurant, Sasanoki.  She went onto chef there for 7 years, before starting to teach Japanese cooking classes in 2011.

Wendy Oey, Auckland

Sarah Vivian, Wellington

“I had a fantastic day painting with Jane. She taught me what aspects make a good painting, and how to apply these to my own art. The day with Jane was hugely informative, as well as fun. I have come away with a wealth of valuable knowledge and have grown my capabilities as an artist. I highly recommend!”

Alice Beach, Arrowtown

"I had such an inspiration day with Jane, she really shared her amazing knowledge and talent and helped me rediscover my creativity. A highly recommended workshop - 5 Stars"

Pauline Gibbs

"I was fortunate enough to spend a day with Jane, whose work I have admired for many years. I have been dabbling with various mediums, styles for many years but felt the need for some direction. Jane’s overriding advice is to find something you are passionate about and to keep exploring this, be organised and methodical in your approach and practice.  Jane is very generous in sharing techniques she has developed over time. The process I followed, alongside Jane was lots of fun using new materials, observing and incorporating techniques, evaluation of the work progressing and adding the final touches to make the work come together. Inclusive is a checklist entitled “what makes a good painting”, as well as materials required, and information to inspire, challenge and reflect on.  I would really recommend the one on one experience."

Kerry Guise

"A day with Jane...it was so much fun, plenty of good laughs, lots of learning, totally out of my comfort zone, supportive, creative and explorative. With Jane's guidance and positivity, I felt I could achieve anything. Thank you for an amazing  day Jane."

Judy Pollard

"Jane has reignited my exploration for painting; with generous sharing of her painting techniques, theoretical knowledge and life experiences of the art world. I thoroughly recommend Jane as a teacher/tutor whether you're new painting or experienced, it doesn't hurt to learning new things."

Antoinette Beck

"I would describe both Jane's painting style and personality as Original, Colourful and Experimental. She imparts her knowledge and demonstrates her techniques in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. Jane has shown me a whole new way of using oils and given me the direction I was seeking, I can't wait to put it into practice!"

Lynda Hensman

"Jane Kellahan workshops will leave you inspired and ready to take your art to a new level. Professional yet fun, I gained so much knowledge on using different techniques as well as applications. Money and time well spent, I certainly will be booking another workshop later in the year. Motivational and Inspirational. Thanks Jane"

Karen Wiggin

"Jane gave me the courage and techniques to raise my paintings to a whole new level. Her workshop was inspirational and her tutoring style was fabulous. The two day private workshop left me feeling elated and eager to continue my painting journey. I now have two fantastic works on my wall at home."

Jenny Davis

"I recently had a two day, private painting course with Jane Kellahan and found the whole experience uplifting. Jane was very generous with sharing her knowledge, techniques and expertise. She was also a valuable critic, which was always delivered in a positive way. I really felt a great sense of achievement and confidence to carry on developing my new skills. Thank you Jane!"

Joyce Stretton

"During the last four years I have attended a number of art workshops. Jane's by far, was the most organised, stimulating, exciting and enjoyable course. Leaving the result to the process we followed was so liberating. I could reel off lines of superlatives about this workshop, this would be meaningless except that in the past, one of my professional duties was assessing teacher's lessons. I'd give Jane's an 'excellent'. I hope to attend another one."

Jenny Davis

"I booked into Jane's group workshop because I have always admired her paintings and I went along, that first morning, feeling very nervous and apprehensive. But, I needn't have worried -Jane was so positive and encouraging. Also, she was very generous with her talent and techniques and I loved the whole weekend experience. I had never used oils before, but Jane gave me confidence to try something new. One painting I did has been much admired and I have had many offers to buy it! On the strength of that experience, I have booked into another workshop."

Jan Fry

"I had such an enjoyable two days taking part in the Art Workshop. The atmosphere was very relaxing, great music, and only 12 in the class kept it intimate and friendly. There was plenty of interaction between each other as well as with Jane. I thought it very good value, all materials provided and wine. I now feel well equipped to take my painting to a higher level, and am very motivated after spending this time with Jane, whose work I have long admired."

Fiona Harrington

"The workshops are a great way to begin thinking in a different way. We experimented with a chosen palette and a range of tools which many of us had not used before. This was a good way to explore different effects and colour mixing. The quality of the materials were excellent which was quiet refreshing. Jane's approach was both encouraging and helpful. You leave feeling inspired."

Susan Weir

"Great workshop - like a good movie I am still thinking about it some months later. The workshop was well planned with inspiring instruction and included good food, wine and a meeting of like minds."
